10 Ways To Protect Your Eyes During Online Classes

March 19, 2021 Career of Physics

Online classes have helped us stay afloat in this lockdown period. Even after schools were shut, students could continue their courses through Skype, Whatsapp, zoom and other apps. However, due to this new format, many students complain of dry eyes, irritation and vision problems. Parents are also getting tense and are consulting doctors as and when required. In this blog, we will talk about 10 techniques that you can follow to keep your eyes safe and at the same time continue with your classes.

1. Don’t Put Your PC near the Window

Keep the machine away from the window to avoid the external lights. If the lights are coming from behind then its fine, but make sure it does not come from the front as this reflects on your screen and will disturb your visibility. Keep the PC or laptop close to the wall where all forms of external lights can be blocked.

2. Adjust the Height of Your Computer

Adjust the height of your computer in a way that you don’t have to strain your neck and eyes too much. You should be able to look straight to the top of the screen and it should come automatically as you switch it on. In relation to this, based on the screen size, you also have to adjust the desk and bring in high backed chairs to lean back slightly and bring the keyboard closer to work comfortably.

3. Adjust the Display

Go to the display settings and reduce the brightness of your pc. Bright screens are damaging to the eyesight due to the rays that come out and hit your retina directly. Also, there are eye comfort settings where your display changes once the lights are on and this is very effective while studying in the evening and night time. Switch it on and your pc will adjust the screen resolutions to make it easier for you to read.

4. Arrange Your Desk

Your pc should be 20-28 inches away from your eyes and rearrange the desk accordingly. Getting closer to the monitor will be damaging for your eyesight in the long term. When looking at 2 documents simultaneously, use split-screen so that you don’t have to shift your eyes repeatedly.

5. Blink

Keep blinking after every 20 seconds and give your eyes the desired break. The 20-20-20 rule is a standard practice that you should try to follow. It says for every 20 minutes; you should look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Even if you cannot do this, close your eyes for sometime after every 20-30 minutes, get up, take a break, give some water to your eyes, and come back again.

6. Anti-glare Glasses

Anti-glare glasses help your eyes minimize the impact of the direct blue rays emitted from the computer. If you are wearing specs, you should always insist on a lense that provides anti-glare features, even if it is expensive. If you don’t wear a glass, get a zero power one and make it anti-reflective and anti-glare.

7. Proper Lighting

Arrange your room lighting based on your comfort. Avoid lights from the front as much as you can. Use low power LED bulbs; it is suitable for your eyes as well as consume less electricity. Extra lighting is not good and so is its reverse; never work in a dark room; it is the worst thing you can do to your eyes.

8. Frequent Breaks

Take frequent breaks, go out of the room and give your eyes rest at each 30-minute interval. Even when the classes are on, you don’t have to look at the screen throughout the entire session. Concentrate on what the teacher is saying and keep noting down on important details. After every 2-3 minutes, look at your copy and outside but get a good headphone to make sure you don’t miss the lecture.

9. Stay at a Safe Distance from the Screen

Never go too close to the screen. If you cannot see something, tell the tutor to increase the word size or provide the video recording later on but don’t go close to the screen to see it. It strains your eyes and should be avoided at all costs. Also, in case of a visibility problem, you should get your eye checked once every six months.

10. Eat Vitamin Rich Diets

Vitamin A is necessary for eye health. As a student you can focus on carrots, lemon, oily sea fishes and omega 3 rich nutrients that can develop your eyesight. Health is important and instead of eating junk foods, prepare a healthy diet that includes all sorts of proteins, vitamins and minerals in your diet. Stay fit and continue your classes online by following these basic guidelines.

Healthy eyesight is essential throughout your academic and working career to be successful and for that you must take good care of your eyes from an early age. As more people are working and learning from home, hence the chances of developing myopia and other eye diseases are very high. Also eye specialists are observing a large number of complaints regarding dry eyes. In case of dry eyes or irritation, consult your ophthalmologist immediately and they will give eye drops and special eye exercises for the health of your eyesight. Do not panic or take medicines based on Google searches, relatives or friends advice. Remember, none of them are doctors.
